Fiinovation Observes International Day for Biological Diversity

Biological diversity is essential for maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. Understanding the importance of preserving the biological diversity to address the prevalent socio-economic and environmental issues, UN sanctioned May 22 to be observed as International Biological Diversity Day. Fiinovation understands that biological diversity supports livelihood of people and sustainable development. It is a cross-cutting theme and its critical role in economic sectors such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries, tourism, etc have been widely acknowledged. It has been understood that if contribution towards reducing the biodiversity loss, we are investing in people and their development.

The theme for this year is “Mainstreaming Biodiversity; Sustaining People and their Livelihoods”. It focuses on the need to mainstream biodiversity preservation efforts to ensure sustainable development for all. India has a rich biodiversity and is currently facing a severe water crisis which is bound to affect it. Water and biodiversity are linked as human-wellbeing, including food security, drinking water and sanitation and economic activities cannot be accomplished if there is environmental degradation. The present biodiversity is a result of billions of years of evolution and they are an integral part of this planet. The humans are dependent on variety of plants, animals and microorganisms. It is a fact that 70 per cent of the world’s poor live in rural areas and are dependent on biodiversity for survival and wellbeing.

Therefore protecting biodiversity is in the interest of the world. The biological resources are foundation for life. Currently, we are affecting the biodiversity with unsustainable consumption. The decline of biodiversity is a serious threat to human development. We need to stop habitat destruction, over harvesting, pollution etc. There is an urgent need to collaborate and reverse the trend with our actions. Cooperations from all the people, civil society, government and corporations will be crucial to stop biodiversity loss. Research can help come out with solutions and achieve social and economical goals.

Fiinovation believes that in order achieve the sustainable development goals, the world will have to responsibly use the natural resources. It is expected that in the years to come we will increase our efforts to preserve biological diversity and manage the variety of life on this planet for the benefit of present and future generations.
